Old & New Holiday Traditions

The holiday season is one of my favorite times of year! One element that I love ~ the holiday traditions! I especially love sharing old holiday traditions and starting new ones with my little ones. Here are some of my old & new favorite traditions this year:

Baking Christmas Cookies ~ This is one of our oldy but oh-so-good traditions and I am sure this is the case with many families! We LOVE baking cookies and each year try "tried & true" recipes and sometimes new ones too. BUT my mother-in-law has the VERY best sugar cookie recipe and we always make her cookies at the holidays. Not only is it fun to make & eat the dough but it is fun to cut them out with cookie cutters and decorate after they have baked! This year we are making Texas & Unicorn (actually a donkey but we won't tell our 4 year old) shaped cookies!

My mother-in-laws famous sugar cookie recipe:

Cookie Dough Ingredients:

  • 2 sticks softened butter
  • 1/2 stick butter Crisco
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp. almond extract
  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. baking powder

  1. Mix together butter, Crisco & sugar
  2. Then add in eggs, vanilla & almond flavoring. Mix well until fluffy texture.
  3. Add in flour, salt and baking powder. Mix well.
  4. Chill dough (I usually chill for a few hours)
  5. Roll out on floured surface, cut out with cookie cutters
  6. Bake on ungreased cookie sheets at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Frosting Ingredients & Directions:

  • Powdered Sugar
  • Milk

Combined until consistency is not very runny and good frosting texture. This is just by eye balling it and takes practice! Add food coloring if desired and sprinkles on top too!

Christmas Pjs on Christmas Eve ~ On Christmas Eve every year when I was little, my siblings and I were allowed to open one gift on Christmas Eve. Every year it was our Christmas pjs. There was nothing better than going to bed on Christmas Eve wear new pajamas and anxiously awaiting the arrival of Santa! It was just the best! Now that I have my own little ones, I have continued this tradition with my girls. They love it just as much as I did!

A little Christmas pj picture and sisterly love headlock. We LOVE our Hello Sunday Christmas Pjs!

ATX Trail of Lights ~ The Trail of Lights is one of our new holiday traditions! We love this (new to us) Austin tradition and so do the girls! An Austin holiday event for the last 50 years, more than 400,000 people attend each year to enjoy the lights, food, drinks and fun at Zilker Park!

Annual Christmas Ornament ~ When I was little every Christmas morning my mom & dad would make a special yummy breakfast! At each of our place settings would be one final present to open. Each year it was a Christmas ornament for our personal collection, one that would help us recall a memory from that year. For example, a special trip we took, sporting event we participated in or other milestone from that year. I loved getting a new ornament each year. Then when I moved away from home and started my own family, my parents gave me my collection of Christmas ornaments! It was a great gift and now is very special to decorate my own tree with some of these special ornaments and recall all the memories!

What are some of your holiday traditions? I would love to hear your traditions in the comment section below. Merry Christmas!
